The Real History of the Partition of India & Pakistan in Ms. Marvel
I find it interesting how the indigenous ppl of America r calld indian altho that was a mistake made by the explorers
Many ethnic groups through history view hair as a spiritual conduit. With longhair comes a sacred connection to that world outside our own. If you cut it off you break that connection. It’s like a spiritual death of sorts.
Meh, I still use oriental to refer to Chinese and that general race, don’t care if some hyper sensitive PC police agree.
The term People of Color is useless. Our experience as Black people unique and other non-whites can be anti-Black.
Many confuse those that are "product of environment" for those that pretend, and they (the confused accusers) are a big part of the issue behind the misconceptions of this topic. Most likely they are also the ones to misinform the true meaning as simply someone not of a culture/race merely partaking in something of another when the “how” and “why” determine more than the “what” imo. Be respectful, be yourself, educate yourself, and embrace other cultures. Culture appropriation is the inappropriate, ignorant, or disrespectful adaptation of a culture. If you were to portray a fraudulent performance of what you take them for, or mock them and their experiences by using something they hold dear such as a hairstyle, then it would be culture appropriation. As well as an uneducated representation of another culture to which one may also make fictitious, sometimes personal, claims. Especially to then be dismissive of the very same people you appropriated. It is not simply wearing something.
Look at that unprofessional shirt she has on.
I appreciate the daily dose of cultural Marxism here! The use of the treaty angle while ignoring the SCOTUS's interpretation of the treaties to claim that you're owed positive rights (something that doesn't exist in US law), is really ingenious. You claim the government has to pay for your every living need from cradle to grave: food, water, shelter, education (free PhDs for everyone!), and healthcare. Now, as someone who works in healthcare and is quite familiar with the IHS, I can tell you that demand alone is a non-starter. There isn't enough money on the planet. If you want all of that, hand over your passport, and emigrate to the utopia of your choice that does promise all of that to their citizens. I don't care which one. But being a US citizen does not entitle you to force me or any other taxpayer to be your slave and pay for your every waking need. What an amazingly arrogant thing to think! And that's as respectful as I can be about this kind of demand.
Do you condemn Hummus?
May God bless your work!
WOW! As a native, I know but I admit, not with this detail. Thank you! 🙏🏽
Reservations are not bad. Reservation seems bad to those, who despise Justice. In India we have reservations too I stand against injustice, abuse and exploitation.
Thank you for the information. As a Mexican with decendants from , Texas , when it was, Tejas , Mexico. I prefer , Hispanic over , Latin.
The only reason we have this dilema in the first place is because of colonialism. Outsiders deciding who we are and us trying to fit that mold then regain our autonomy overtime.
I'm always having internal conflict due to my paternal grandmother being full blooded Seminole and my mother's side being European countries. So I bothe feel anger for how my paternal grandmother's, and truly my ancestors too, were treated. But then I feel overwhelming guilt for what my other ancestors of European decent did. I feel confused all the time. But I still show pride for my native blood although it may be diluted. And I try to teach all I come into contact with about our history and teach my daughter to feel pride in all cultures that came together in her.
It was Emanuel!!! Are you joking with Yeshua????
Excuse me Tai, but as a (white) Australian, I was always taught to refer to the original/first people of a land as either 'indigenous-[insert country here]', 'first nations people' or 'native-[insert country here]'. I don't wish to be ignorantly offensive, so I'm here asking for clarification. You very specifically use the word 'Indian' to refer to the collection of tribes that first settled the land that is now the US, and I remember you saying that it had to do with 'Indian' being a legal term with regards to the many Treaties and Reservations. Can you (or another commenter) please elaborate? Which names should I avoid, and which names would it be appropriate for an outsider to use?
mistake on map at 4:29. Canyon de Chelly is still part of the Navajo Nation. also, the Navajo Nation is literally where the Diné are from.
Jesus name didn't change through translations. In the New testament which was written in Greek from his disciples Matthew, Luke, John etc. they used the name "Ιησούς Χριστός" Jesus Christ.
That's not a Democracy, that's a Republic. Which is what America is as well. It's a critical distinction.
I just say indigenous 😭
The United State is a Republic. That's why we call it The Republic of the United States.
That was a hard thing for my grandma, its horrible how they did that
It’s for us to be real because is in our interest to be about it, other people are trash and don’t need to worry about trees endanger animals and natural resources since they just take it haha dum doesn’t get us and we don’t let them practically never stupid crazy bald heads hehehehe dorks
🙄 My lord. Yes, yes, we get it, "Everything is African." Good grief PBS, give it a rest already.
Not to take anything away from the point, as I agree with you. But I feel like it's fair to mention not all of the geniuses aboard the submarine were white.
Cutting their hair was only the tip of the iceberg of the many atrocities they did to ALL of the kids that were forced into those boarding schools!!! Many of the children never came back home!!! That needs to be included in all of the history books in American public schools!!
My tribe prefers American Indian and that is what is on our official documents. But I personally don't care what people call me. I am proud to be both American Indian and an American 😊
2020 and it took a course reinterring a 1964 law. This should have happened in the 70s or 80s. And public bigotry in general and against gay people has skyrocked since then (since 2015 also when it comes to widespread open racism). Social media and smart phones were only 10 years old and the internet as we know it only about 20 years old, when we started using it as the main way widespread bigotry and twisted philosophical understandings of the world that promote bigotry for one complicated conspiratorial reason or another. Now bigotry is at the center of almost all major political issues. But people will still say “oh no this is not a bigoted country/broader society.”
Cutting anyones hair who does not want their hair cut is a disrespectful violation.
This whole country gets its Identity from Black people and the trends we create! Whyte kids would be depressed and very lame as a group of Black people truly gate-kept our trends and culture
I am deeply saddened by the disrespect and barbarick behavior of Americams against the Indigenous People of North America. And l thank the 5 Civikizwd Tribes for helping draft our country's Bill of Rights. Huge contribution to the idea of democracy and gift we did not deserve. The leadership of Native men and women is of the highest caliber and wisdom. I am forever grateful.
Inuit
If I marry you, do I get a green card? Yes? Then you're American.
Thank you for acknowledgeing South american indigenous people
You hit the nail on the head. We love pop culture because it gives our lazy minds a nice little package to fit people into. Stereotypes which all use as a reference point which gets us into trouble with our fellow human beings. "Content of their character"
0:01 Because the difference between a fiend and friend is just a single arrr?
Wost it happens till 1994 this is so CRAZY
I had a very good friend go to jail for a couple years and at first they told him that he wouldn't be required to shave his hair because he was full Native American and he filed paperwork multiple times to ensure that they would stick to the deal. But of course they didn't, about 9 or 10 months of being there they shaved his hair down to like a 1. He fought so hard to keep it and they even BS'd him about it. That was such a bogus thing to do, didn't expect anything different from a Florida prison though.
Rip Cole Brings Plenty :(
This was not taught in my 4th grade California history class. That class also left out the genocide that Junipero Serra and Sutter as in Sutter's fort was responsible for. I've only learned about these things because of videos like yours and public radio. They did cover the Donner party in 4th grade California history but left out the part about the native guides being killed and eaten first.
Stop calling fucking natives Indians. Theirs 1.1 billion Indians making up 1/6th of the world population and they come from Asia with one of the oldest continuing civilizations on earth. Stop calling peoples from the Americas something their not it’s ignorant as a mf
And no you would have NEVER knew without ME telling you

New York Times Who Were the Ancestors of Native Americans? A Lost People in Siberia, Scientists Say Genetic analysis of ancient teeth and bones suggests Native Americans largely descend from a vanished group called the Ancient Paleo-Siberians. Siberians are not Indigenous to America. Siberia is on the Euro/Russian/ China border. They have always intermingled. To them, East would be America. When they came there were already people here. 1828 Noah Webster dictionary AMER'ICAN, adjective Pertaining to America. The name American must always exalt the pride of patriotism. - Washington. So now anyone can be called a Native. And yes, they have their own culture. It's their's. The term Native was not used widely until the 1970s. It was used as a Name for a political party. Called the Native American. The Know Nothing Party. There were a people already here and they had their culture too.
But what if you're not talking about an individual but all of them collectively, across tribal lines?

Sometimes hair is a piece of the culture. Just like clothes or songs.
Tell us more. We want to know. We want to remember.
This is why it's wrong to inflict your views and perspective forced on others. Leftists, big gov't lovers, are you listening? God is freedom. Satan is the opposite.
These people who forced our people to cut our hair and give up our culture were christians, if you two were put in the same room you wouldn't see a difference, if we were put in the same room one of us wouldn't make it out alive. Our only freedom as indigenous people can come from returning to our ways taken from us.
